The good old saying "buy local" doesn't just apply to baked goods and organic products, it's often a good motto to keep in mind whilst you're making your music selections.
We're so use to being bombarded with the many out there American artists that our own Melbourne sensations often get left behind, and what kind of country would we be if we didn't support our own musicians?
To help make up your mind on the American vs Australian debate here's a handful of talented Melbourne bands all deserving of a spot on your iPod.
Loon Lake - After being played on repeat on Triple J, Loon Lake are quickly onto bigger and better things. Set to play at numerous festivals in the Summer Loon Lake are about to become a household name, so beat the crowd and get to know them before everyone else does.
Chet Faker - Swing back a couple of years and if we uttered the name "Chet Faker" you would be scratching your head. But since uploading some home recorded tracks on his website last year Nick Murphy has been pushed into the spotlight and even cleaned up on numerous awards nights, most recently at the Jagermeister Independent Music Awards. There is actually some substance behind all these awards so make sure you have a listen.
Alpine - With their sweet mesmerising music it's no wonder they've got the whole of Australia hypnotised. After being featured on Triple J Alpine went on to tour Australia and America and have just realised their debut album.
Them Swoops - Describing their genre as "harp-fuzz guitar-psych wig-out explode-pop" we'd say they're pretty spot on. With their upbeat tunes they easily deserve a place on your Summer playlist.
