Band Feature: Rabid Zulu

Rabid Zulu is a four-piece Alternative rock band from Bendigo, a city around 170 kilometres from Melbourne CBD. The band draws its influences from several Australian bands, such as Baby Animals, The Living End and AC/DC, as well as some international acts such as Foo Fighters and Led Zeppelin.

Lead vocalist Bek Taylor also plays rhythm guitar, while partner Jimmy Black plays the lead guitar with backup vocals. Jarrod Hocking is on the drums with Keith Udale-Gordon on the bass.

Bek and Jarrod met through a mutual love for The Living End, and upon discovering they both play instruments Jimmy and Bek went for a jam in Jarrod’s shed in July 2011. Bassist Keith came shortly after Bek’s 21st birthday in March, and shortly after, Rabid Zulu was born in April 2012.

Bek and Jimmy write and compose all the songs, and each band member has a say in arranging the music with their respective instruments.

Since their very first gig in June this year, Rabid Zulu has played in pubs and bars all over Bendigo and Ballarat, and have been featured on Triple J’s Unearthed Online’s Top 10 Rock charts. The band has also just recording a new single, "Powerline", due for release in early-to-mid November.

Rabid Zulu is soon coming to Melbourne, with an appearance in the Melbourne wing of Scorcher Fest on December 9 at Noise Bar in Brunswick.
