Melbourne’s CBD is well known for being Australia’s culinary capital, with every corner offering up new delights. However, the outer suburbs also have plenty to offer every kind of discerning diner. Our choice for Italian is Rococo’s, located on the busy hub of Glenferrie Road in Hawthorn.
Rococo’s offers both sidewalk and indoor seating. Inside, the tables are spaced appropriately, always a good thing when it comes to eating in a public place. The only negative to being seated inside is the noisiness of all the room, and the lack of appropriate lighting, which makes it difficult to see your friends and menu.
Our waitress attended to us within five minutes of us sitting down, offering us both a drink menu and dinner menu. Our order was taken just five more minutes after that, and our drinks and herb bread arrived shortly after. It was at this point that we were informed that due to the busy nature of the evening, there was a half-an-hour wait for food. Despite this, our main meals still arrived within the time given and were still hot.
I ordered a gnocchi carbonara, which came in a creamy sauce with mushroom and pancetta, garnished with parsley and parmesan. Though it was a bit heavy with the cream and mushroom, the parsley added a bit of freshness and the gnocchi was light and fluffy. The food was beautifully presented and tasted just as good. My companion had penne with a thick tomato sauce, which was also heavy, but tasted excellent.
For dessert, we shared a hazelnut, chocolate pudding, which arrived with a ball of coffee ice cream on a bed of coffee grains. The ice cream lightened the heaviness of the chocolate pudding, and the hazelnuts added a nice crunch, well worth the $8.50 we paid.
Rococo’s is a lovely dining experience, with the atmosphere, service and food well worth the price tag, and is perfect for any occasion!
